When an 8:00 am deadline is given for a failing-soap opera, a bickering cast will attempt to save their show all whilst surviving through three murders.

Steilacoom’s Drama Club recently put together a performance of Don Zolidis’ The Bold, The Young and the Murdered for the fall play in the SHS Theatre on November 16th and 17th.

The play takes place on the set of the long-running soap opera, The Bold and The Young during its last days. The cast consists of a hodgepodge of people: some have been there for decades, others have been there for a day, who don’t get along with each other in the slightest. The cast is given the challenge of finishing an episode before the stroke of midnight at the cost of their show being completely cut, but everything goes sour once the director is murdered. With a murderer in the building, the cast members are forced to play detective and put an end to the homicide.

The cast consisted of twelve starring actors of all different grades and experience levels. Additionally, the fall play was student directed by junior Olivia Shepard instead of the drama club advisor Ms. Hayden.

Shepard said, of the experience, “Being a student director was a lot of fun! I got to put my vision for the show on the stage and work with my friends in a professional way. It was a bit challenging though, considering it was my first big responsibility as an upperclassmen. At times it was hard to communicate as a director to the cast, and when show night was approaching, the pressure was on. Overall though, the cast was goofy, dedicated, amazing, and lovable, and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to direct than them.”

Sophomore actor Joseph Bong commented, “Having the play be student directed was a unique experience. Having a reference from a fellow student was nice because it allowed us as actors to know and understand character development and get insight from someone who would attend the show.”

Drama Club began preparation in September and worked hard up until the day of performance to get everything perfected. Most of the cast agrees that rehearsals were stressful at times as it takes a whole group effort to put together something as large as a play.

Freshman actress Tyshae Gamble recalled, “It was really slow at first, but then it got really fast pace and we had to learn our lines and stage directions and it was very tedious.”

On performance day, everything came together just in time. The actors were able to deliver a smooth performance and the crew was able to create an atmosphere fit for this murder mystery.

At the end of the play senior actor, Trenton Blomgren was honored as this was the last SHS play he’d be part of.

On reflecting on the experience as a whole Blomgren exclaimed, “It’s been a blast, dude. Being with my other cast [members] and getting to know them for my last performance as a senior has been absolutely phenomenal. I wouldn’t pick a better group of individuals to do it with.”
