Study Time and Advisory

This school year, ACE day schedules have been changed. There is now advisory in the morning and study time in the afternoon. Advisory is when a group of students in the same grade meet with their advisor to discuss academic, social, and future-planning issues, while study time is when students can finish homework, study, or go to another room to make up work or retake an assessment.

Opinions are mixed about study time and advisory. Some SHS students like the advisory and study periods, like sophomore Nick May, who said, “I think it’s all right.”

Sophomore Raven DuClos also said that she thought this was a good idea, but she had her concerns. “It was definitely a smart move for the school to make because now we actually get time to study instead of talking about advisory. The downside is that it takes up a lot more time, which means taking time away from classes. It defeats the purpose of study time if we have less class time.”

While some people appreciate that there is extra time to study and get work done, others think it takes time away from class, or not long enough to be useful or effective. Mrs. Anderson, who teaches algebra and bridges, says that she sees “the benefits of having the 20-minute [study and advisory] periods, but it’s too much to do on a Wednesday.” Freshman Kristin Koznarsky said that she thinks that “we should make it one chunk of time, because with the limited amount of study time, we don’t have enough time to access our teachers.”

While the advisory and study periods have their downsides, students can use them to work done, and plan their goals for high school and beyond, and teachers can get extra time to grade assignments during the school day.
