Steilacoom cross country kicked off their season at the Fort Steilacoom Invite Saturday, September 16th. The Invite, one of the largest that Steilacoom competes in, hosted 82 high school teams from across the state of Washington.

The SHS boys varsity team ran an impressive race and had two athletes finish in the top ten of the Silver Varsity division. Junior Broghan Zimmerman led the pack for Steilacoom, running a personal record of 16:38.7, and claiming 5th place. He said, “I’m really happy with the way my race went. I could’ve had a faster start because I had to get around a lot of people in the first mile but other than that I felt good about the whole thing.” On the tail of Zimmerman was sophomore Zach Koivisto who ran a personal record of 16:40 which was good for 7th place.

“I cut 39 seconds off of my PR,” Koivisto said.  “My favorite part is that a bunch of people got to PR at this race and see their training pay off. I had a blast!”

The SHS girls varsity team put their hard work in practice on display at the invite. First across the line for Steilacoom was Senior Abby Hubbard. Her time of 21:30.9 earned her 46th place in the Silver Varsity division. Since the team is smaller this year, several girls who previously were on JV had to step up and fill in a few of the varsity spots. Sophomore Zarah Drennan ran varsity for the first time on Saturday. She said, “It was cool, but at the same time pretty scary because everyone was so fast.”

The SHS JV boys and girls teams ran their hearts out in their respective races. On the boys side, senior Steven Froehle, juniors Noah Gauntz and Leon Wan, sophomores Landon Flake, Mitchell Bain, Chris Maxwell, and Sean Craine, and freshmen Sawyer Dagan, Shannon Lange, Julian Estep, Colin Hitchcock, Carlos Flores, Connor Hoffman, Jade Snedecor, and Andrew West all ran times that were personal records. On the girls side, senior Jenna Nolasco, sophomores Sarah Cha and Emma Dustin, and freshmen Jayden Castillo-Stew, Sanae Fujii, Ava Gonzales, Lily Sentinel, and Noria Sentinel earned personal records.

Their next meet is on Thursday, September 21st versus Renton and Clover Park at Fort Steilacoom Park. It is a home meet so come on out and show your Steilly pride!
