Over the past weekend, the Steilacoom boys swim and dive team competed at the 2A State meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Steilacoom finished 8th out of 34 teams with a total of 122 points. Individually, the Sentinels had three top five finishes, including a first place finish by senior Nic Malinowski in the one meter Dive.

Seniors Nic Malinowski, Max Elkins, and Calin Zavala were the only divers for Steilacoom. While Zavala narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semifinals, both Malinoski and Elkins made it through the preliminary and semifinal rounds to compete in the finals. Malinowski led the competition through the first two rounds with scores of 182.5 and 249.95, a solid 20 points above second place. In the finals, Malinowski’s prowess as a diver proved to be effective as he claimed the State Champion title with a score of 360.85. Elkins earned 225.4 points in the final, good for 16th place.

Senior Steve Froehle swam in four events: the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle relay, and 400 yard freestyle relay. Froehle placed in the top seven in all of his events, earning his highest placement in the 50 yard freestyle with a second place finish in a time of 21.53 seconds. He reflected on his performance in the 50 yard freestyle, “That was one of the best races I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve been working on every aspect of that race this season, whether that was the start, the turn, or anything in between.”

Senior Noah Burlingame placed seventh in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 55.18 seconds. He also swam in the 400 yard freestyle relay and 200 yard freestyle relay earning sixth and seventh place finishes respectively.

The State meet marked the end of the season, and with that, the culmination of months of hard work and training. Congratulations to the boys swim team for bringing home an eighth place finish at State and to all athletes for their individual performances!
