Mrs. Weyhrauch, one of the many teachers at Steilacoom High School, has been taking a step beyond teaching and exercising her skills as a principal in training. Besides being in charge of ninth and tenth grade English, Mrs. Weyhrauch balances being the class of 2018 advisor, creative writing advisor and most recently a principal intern.

Mrs. Weyhrauch has always had a deep love for school and teaching, to the point where she purposely failed a class in second grade just so she could take summer school. Around the age of ten, she decided to make her own makeshift school in her basement, rounding up all the little kids in her neighborhood to teach them anything from numbers to letters.

Being a military wife whilst being a teacher, Mrs. Weyhrauch has lived and taught in numerous areas around the world: “I’ve taught in Minnesota, California, Germany, Alaska, Belgium, Kansas and here.” Having this experience allows her to relate to the military kids in Steilacoom that make up a large majority of the school.

With many years of experience under her belt, Mrs. Weyhrauch has decided to take on the challenge of becoming a principal. She feels that after teaching in so many different schools she’s learned what does and doesn’t work in the academic environment.

She explained her reasoning saying, “I want to affect more than just five classes of students. I want to affect a whole school environment and make it the best school for students.”

Being an intern has been a one of a kind experience for her as she’s been able to see the students of Steilacoom outside of the classroom. You might have seen Mrs. Weyhrauch navigating her way through the raging sea that is high school lunch. She commented, “I like meeting with different students and seeing how different dynamics work and talking to them outside of the classroom.”

Interning has also come with its difficulties. Being in charge of an entire school is a large step up from managing a few periods worth of students. Mrs. Weyhrauch explained, “People are always coming and asking questions and wanting a piece of you and you have to figure out how to manage that.” Through it all she really does enjoy the challenge.

When she isn’t teaching she enjoys interior design, cooking, gardening, and exercising with her workout pal Mrs. Zimmerman. On top of everything, Mrs. Weyhrauch is attending St. Martins University for more education. She continued to validate her passion for learning saying, “I’ve been in school since kindergarten and I haven’t stopped since.”

Amongst her students, Mrs. Weyhrauch is known for her exciting and hands on teaching style. Sophomore Louise Gado stated, “She puts a lot of passion and energy into teaching her students. She has this really childlike aura whilst still being funny and knowing the boundaries of discipline.”

At the end of the day Mrs. Weyhrauch hopes that her students know that she truly cares about them saying, “I want them to know that I like them and that I genuinely care about what I’m doing.”

Whether you see Mrs. Weyhrauch doing anything from teaching English or monitoring detention, feel free to come up and say hi.

Mrs W is a wonderful person who truly cares, she was always a person who would help if needed. If I was struggling with something, she wouldn’t hesitate to help. I had the pleasure of going to school with her. Always excelled at everything she set her mind to. That article was spot on. Very cool Brenda.
