If you’ve seen any sophomores stressing out recently, they’re probably taking an AP class. Sophomore year is when students at SHS are first allowed to sign up for AP, or Advanced Placement classes, which allow high school students to receive college credit if they pass the national exam towards the end of the year. The AP classes offered to sophomores this year were AP World History, AP Environmental Science, AP Music Theory, AP Psychology, and AP Studio Art.
With around 90 sophomores in total, AP World History is the most desired class by students. The subject delves into significant events and individuals in historical periods throughout the world. Mr. Bartlett, who currently teaches AP World, stated that the benefits of sophomores taking the class were that, “You learn how to fail, and you get an idea if you’re good enough to do AP.”
Sophomore Lance Henricks said he decided to take AP World History because, “I did good in geography and I thought it would transfer over well into AP.”
AP Environmental Science, often referred to as APES, is a new class at Steilacoom High. Taught by Mrs. Jellison, it involves learning about the natural world through hands-on laboratory investigations and observations. When asked what made him take the class, Adam Van Manen replied, “I found it interesting and I’m interested in environmental engineering, so I thought it was a good class and for that college credit.” He also wanted to spread out his AP classes, rather than cramming challenging classes in his junior and senior year.
Additionally, AP Music Theory is another new class at our school. Students who are in the class have an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of music theory such as composition, history, and sight-reading. Sophia Lussier, who currently is a part of band stated that she’s most looking forward to, “Being able to play my instrument better by learning the theory behind it.” When asked what she was dreading most about the class she responded, “Sight-singing. It sucks.”
AP Psych allows students to discover the scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of humans and animals. However, not a lot of sophomores were able to enroll in the class because it was very popular amongst upperclassmen. Sydney Sherwood stated, “We were originally told sophomores weren’t allowed in the class, so I was extremely surprised when I got in.” Sydney added that she was looking forward to learning about different experiments psychologists performed on animals, even if they are pretty gruesome.
AP Studio Art is for students who want to further develop their skills as an artist. Graphic design, painting, and printmaking are just some of the concepts covered in the class. Sophomore Kyla Eastman stated, “I’m very bad with ideas, so it’ll be hard being creative and meeting deadlines.” However, she expressed her interest in it because the class gives students more freedom in the work they produce.
Overall, there is a wide range of AP classes offered this year at SHS. Though it may be challenging and rigorous, it’s worth getting a head start in college, and it could save money in the long run. Some advice Mr. Bartlett gave to students considering taking AP World History next year was, “Make sure you either like history, or are prepared to write. A lot. And also, you gotta be okay with failing.”
