On Friday, November 17th, the Steilacoom football team made it to the District quarter-final against the Tumwater Thunder Birds at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood. The Sentinels played the T-Birds back in September, in a game that ended with Tumwater handily beating Steilacoom 48 to 12.  This time around however, the Sentinels gave the T-Birds a significant run for their money.

In the first quarter, the T-Birds scored a field goal against the Sentinels, but in the second quarter, the Sentinels scored a touchdown when junior JJ Lemming threw a pass to senior Jordan Bush-Johnson who ran 78 yards for the score and a point-after kick. Tumwater then scored a touchdown, with three minutes before halftime making the score 10-7 Tumwater. With 2:45 to go, Tumwater also managed to make a field goal, putting the score at 13-7 Tumwater at the halftime buzzer.

In the third quarter, Tumwater scored another field goal, increasing their lead to 16-7. But the Sentinels intercepted a play by the T-Birds, and with 1:47 left in the third quarter, they scored a touchdown when Emeka Egbuka received the ball from JJ Lemming, and made an 8-yard run, making it 16-13 Tumwater. However, within the remaining time left in the third quarter, the T-Birds managed another touchdown, and a point-after kick, making the score 23-13. There were no touchdowns or field goals scored by either team in the final quarter. Tumwater senior Connor Clark intercepted the ball from Lemming and ran down the sideline until he was tackled near the middle of the field, ending the Sentinel’s chance to pull within a field goal and ending their season.

Despite the loss, attitudes among the team remain positive. Team captain, senior lineman Parker Danielson, said, “The only thing that led to our loss was injuries slowing us down and taking people out. However, as I reflect on what we have accomplished through the team, being one of the first teams to win both league champions and make it to the quarterfinals, it is a special thing we were able to accomplish.”

Freshman running back and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka not only tied former player Marques Hampton’s school record for receiving touchdowns (13), but he has also been given the chance to play in All-American Freshman Football, with the best freshman players in the country.

While to some, it might be disappointment that the Sentinels didn’t win the quarterfinal game, we all can be proud of how well they did this year. Here’s to a great season, and the excitement for next year!
