The month of September was a busy one for Steilacoom’s nine fall sport teams. Each team suffered through tough practices, worked out the kinks in their first few games, and in the end, bonded through their time together. Busy might even be an understatement and yet, it is about to get even busier. Yes, it is grind time. For all athletes playing fall sports, it is time to hop on the pain train, buckle down, and prepare for one crazy ride. October is home to the rest of the regular season, where final conference games decide whether teams move onto the postseason or not. All is on the line as hard work from the summer and the beginning of the season start to pay off. Here is an update on how the Steilacoom teams have fared so far, as well as a preview of what is to come.

Football

Currently, the SHS football team sits proudly in the first seed of the SPSL 2A- Sound Conference, with a 3-0 conference record and notable victories over River Ridge and Eatonville, ranked second and third in the Conference. Hopefully all the success in the early season will carry on through to the end of the season. The back end of the season includes three games, all conference games, versus Orting, Highline, and Clover Park. In the Conference, those teams are ranked fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

Golf

The SHS golf team is composed of two teams: boys golf and girls golf. Both teams managed well in the beginning of the season, with the boys sporting a 4-1 conference record and the girls sporting a 2-3 conference record. Currently, the boys team is ranked second in their conference while the girls team is fifth. They have six upcoming games left in the regular season against notable teams such as Orting,  Lindbergh, and Renton who are ranked first, second, and third in the Conference.

Cross Country

Similar to the golf team, the SHS cross country team is really two teams, divided into the boys team and the girls team. Both the boys and girls team lead the SPSL 2A- Sound Conference rankings, although the girls team is tied for first with Orting. Last season, both teams went undefeated during the regular season and qualified to compete at the State meet. This season, it is a team goal to continue the undefeated streak as well as the State streak. In the remainder of the season, the team will run three more conference meets before the postseason begins. One of the teams they will face is Orting, who is currently ranked first in the Conference on the girls side and second on the boys side.

Tennis

The SHS boys tennis team is currently undefeated with a 9-0 conference record and tops the rankings in the sub-district as the first seed. There are six matches left in the regular season, three of which are home and three of which are away. Their last match of the regular season is against Renton who sits just beneath Steilacoom in the second seed of the SPSL- 2A Sound rankings.

Swim and Dive

The SHS girls swim and dive team occupies the first seed of the SPSL 2A- Sound rankings with an undefeated conference record of 5-0. Last season, they won all of their regular season meets but one, and this year they look to avenge that one loss with an undefeated season. Already, the team is looking strong as a record has already been broken and many other athletes are closing in on previous personal records and school records. There are eight meets left in the regular season and a long list of qualified opponents to face such as Renton, Lindbergh, and Eatonville who are ranked second, fourth, and fifth in their conference respectively.

Soccer

Alongside the football team, the boys and girls cross country teams, the boys tennis team, and the girls swim and dive team, the SHS girls soccer team asserted their dominance in the SPSl- 2A Sound league by snagging the number one seed (Steilacoom and Orting are tied for first place). They have a 5-0-2 conference record with four victories over distinguished teams like Eatonville and one tie against Orting. The rest of the regular season consists of nine games against opponents like Highline who is ranked fourth in their league and a rematch against Orting.

Volleyball

The SHS girls volleyball team currently holds the third seed in the SPSl- 2A Sound league with 4-2 conference record. During the front end of the season, they faced a tough line up, including Orting and River Ridge, the number one and two teams in the conference. There are nine games remaining in the regular season against a wide range of teams from a rematch against number one Orting to Renton who is currently seeded in last place. Despite facing Orting and River Ridge again, the two teams they lost to, there are plenty of opportunities to win games and solidify their spot in the top four teams of the conference, which would qualify them for postseason play.

As the Steilacoom fall sport teams enter into the back end of the season, keep your ears open for important updates regarding teams’ statuses. Additionally, noteworthy game recaps will be posted on the online newspaper at steilacoomsentinel.org. Most importantly, make sure to come out and show you Steilly pride in the remainder of the season as teams strive for postseason seeds. Go Sentinels!
