On Saturday, December 2nd at Steilacoom High School, the 20th annual Red Ribbon Bazaar took place in which over 75 vendors and many SHS clubs sold goods and services at booths around the school. The Bazaar was put on by the SHS Booster Club with student volunteer help from the National Honor Society (NHS).

In order to encourage shoppers to visit every booth at the Bazaar, the Booster Club came up with the “Passport to Fun,” which was a slip of paper on which shoppers had to get forty signatures on from vendors to be entered into a raffle for a Samsung tablet.

There were a large variety of goods from the vendors who sold items from tupperware to handcrafted cork ornaments and decorations. Many of the vendors also sell their goods at the Farmer’s Market put on by the Town of Steilacoom in the summer and are always dependable for gift material no matter the season.

Clubs such as Anime Club, Model United Nations (MUN), Environmental Stewardship Club (ESC), Film Club, Student to Student (S2S), Book Club, Key Club, as well as the Band and Choir groups were all selling products to raise funds for their clubs and fund projects. Anime Club sold handmade merchandise from some of their favorite fandoms as well as baked goods like Band. Across the hall from the Anime Club, S2S sold jars of apple cider mix and handed out information about their club. Choir was selling orders for packages of coffee and hot chocolate to keep you warm during the winter. MUN was selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts by the dozen until they sold out at which point a mixture of original and unoriginal artwork was made for purchase and did surprisingly well. For the younger children and young-at-heart adults and students, the Film Club put together a “Pictures with Santa” booth and ESC did face painting for donations. Book Club sold chocolate covered pretzels, slime, and shrinky dinks and then worked with Key Club who would wrap them for free.

The NHS had student volunteers to help vendors set up booths in the morning, pack up in the evening, and help with anything they could throughout the day.

The silent tree auction put on by Booster Club had some trees donated by the ESC and the Book Club. The Book Club put together a rather snazzy Stranger Things themed tree while the ESC decorated five live trees with ornaments made from recycled material with a fantasy theme, Chinese take-out theme, crane theme, and two balloon themed trees. All of the trees sold for more than their starting bids.

An issue with the elevator led to many of the booths having to be moved to the foods room hallway which was a little cramped and out of the way for shoppers. To help get people attracted to the hallway, the booths there were worth double points on the Passport to Fun.

There was a collective observation from many of the vendors that the Bazaar this year was a lot less busy than it had been in years past which was bad news for them because it meant less opportunity to sell their goods.

At the end of the day, the 2017 Red Ribbon Bazaar was a success and a great place to have gotten some gift shopping done for the holidays. The 2018 Red Ribbon Bazaar will take place on the first Saturday in December as per usual. Be sure to check it out if you missed this years!
